HONOLULU (AP) It’s not often you hear a school’s website say, “Get an online college degree.”
That’s exactly what Harvard University has done.
It’s now offering an online degree in computer science and engineering.
The program is aimed at people with little or no prior experience in computer-related fields.
Students can apply online for an online master’s degree, an online doctorate, an advanced bachelor’s degree in computing and information systems, and a bachelor’s in computer and information science, all of which cost $2,600, plus a $500 stipend.
The program is designed to allow students to explore the world of computer science through a hands-on environment, and it has attracted more than 5,000 applicants.
The average tuition and fees are $47,300, with a cap of $62,300 for a graduate degree.
For many of the students who are now taking the program, it’s the first time they’ve had the chance to do that.
One of the more popular candidates is a 29-year-old from Brooklyn, New York.
His name is Evan Lee.
He’s also been studying at Harvard.
He has just started his first year of the program.
Lee’s goal is to become a computer scientist.
But the biggest challenge he has is getting the curriculum right.
He said he has to be flexible about what he chooses to study, and to avoid cramming.
Lee said the only way he’ll get the degree is if people are interested in it.
He hopes his work helps change the way computer scientists think.
“I would like to see more of a focus on theory and engineering,” Lee said.
Lee has been studying computers for three years.
He says he wanted to get his degree because he wants to do something with his own money.
“The main reason I took this course was to get a degree that is relevant to the industry and to the world,” Lee explained.
The computer science department at Harvard has a few students who have earned degrees in the past.
The computer engineering department also has a couple students who did not graduate from college.
“It’s not like a bachelor of science degree where you just sit around and go home,” said student Kye Lee, 19, of Brooklyn.
“There are certain aspects that are really important to a computer engineer and I think that there’s a need for it.”
Lee said he likes the online course, but it has a lot of hurdles.
“This is the first online degree that I’ve taken,” Lee added.
The Harvard University Department of Computer Science and Engineering has posted a video of Lee’s interview with CBS News on its website.
Lee says he is hoping his course will help people think differently about how they think about the world.
“If you don’t want to learn from others, you can learn from yourself,” Lee told CBS News.
“This is a way for you to practice.”
Lee is hopeful his online program will help change the world as computer science continues to grow.
